A Note on this Earth Day

This year, the theme for Earth Day is to ‘Invest in Our Planet’. Investing in our planet means creating change on both an individual level and also holding those accountable who have the power to make meaningful changes in our economy and society. The theme this year is focused on “engaging governments, institutions, businesses and the more than 1 billion citizens who participate annually in Earth Day to do their part – everyone accounted for, everyone accountable”. By engaging these main stakeholders in the fight to restore and protect our planet, change can happen.

As we celebrate Earth Day this year, on the 22nd of April, it is important to take time to pause and reflect on how we engage with our planet in our everyday lives. In the European Parliament, I have been working on issues related to the environment through the ENVI (Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) Committee. However, on a constituency level I have been able to get out into nature by visiting local communities and groups when I go on trips around Ireland South. Being able to see how people engage with our planet on a local level makes the work that happens on a European level meaningful and rewarding.

This Earth Day, I want to reflect on the wonders of the world – the biodiversity and beauty in nature. This earth day I want to celebrate those who care for our planet and encourage you to make an effort to protect, restore and nurture our planet.
